چکیده

Abstract With the application of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs), damage behaviors and mechanisms are desirable to understand. In this work, Bismaleimide (BMI) matrix composites were employed study mechanism under transverse loading through quasi-static indentation, where optical microscopy, ultrasonic C-scan, scanning electron microscope subjected examine damaged regions. The results show that cracks first take place in a resin-rich interlaminar region before reached threshold value. Then, would develop into intralaminar bundle consisting shear bending cracks. Subsequently, randomly extend adjacent plies result delamination. Finally, back surface presents remarkable ply splitting breakage increasing loading. Furthermore, conical-shaped indentation patterns cross-sectional undamaged zone indenter suggest BMI possess potential applications engineering materials with superior stress-releasing structure.

Contact Behaviour of Composite Laminate under Quasi-Static Indentation Load

A viable solution to the ever-demanding weight-saving target in aerospace industry is the replacement of conventional engineering alloys with composite materials in primary structures. A major concern to the effective use of composite laminates is the substantial reduction in the compressive strength when the contact force has exceeded the delamination threshold load (DTL). This paper focuses o...

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Bismaleimide Composites

Bismaleimide (BMI) resins are developed very rapidly due to the demands of the defense and aerospace industries. They are cross-linked polymers which process like epoxy resins but have an upper use temperature of 230°C, compared to the epoxy upper use temperature of 175°C. Also due to the available intrinsic properties of BMI resins such as higher thermal stability and lower toxicity than those...

Investigation of Quasi-Static Indentation Response of Inkjet Printed Sandwich Structures under Various Indenter Geometries

The objective of this investigation was to determine the quasi-static indentation response and failure mode in three-dimensional (3D) printed trapezoidal core structures, and to characterize the energy absorbed by the structures. In this work, the trapezoidal sandwich structure was designed in the following two ways. Firstly, the trapezoidal core along with its facesheet was 3D printed as a sin...

Quasi-static and dynamic fracture of graphite/epoxy composites: An optical study of loading-rate effects

Strain-rate effects on fracture behavior of unidirectional composite materials are studied. Single-edge notched multi-layered unidirectional graphite composites (T800/3900-2) are investigated to examine fracture responses under static and dynamic loading conditions using a digital speckle correlation method. The fracture parameters for growing cracks are extracted as a function of fiber orienta...
